As I’ve mentioned before I started getting into Nerdcore Hip-Hop a year ago when I got turned on to MC Chris. From there it was just a quick Google search to discover many other nerdcore artists including MC Frontalot who originally coined the term. I’ve listened to Frontalot’s debut CD Nerdcore Rising more then any other this past year. I got downright obsessed with it at one point and had it going all the time at work. It’s been quite some time that a record has gotten it’s hooks in me quite like this one did. So when Frontalot released his new CD Final Boss this month I was hoping he would tour and come within reasonable driving distances. To my surprise I discovered that not only was he touring, but he would be playing Howard’s in my old haunt of Bowling Green a measly 30 minutes south of Toledo.
So work was blown off for the evening… erm, I mean I was sick and the only cure was a MC Frontalot show! What a show it was. It was easily one of the best live shows I’ve seen. Frontalot has a ton of energy and sounds completely awesome live backed up by his band. To be honest the only other rap show I’ve been too was the Beastie Boys at Lollapalooza ‘94. So I don’t have anything else I can compare it too, but believe me when I say it was a awesome show. Needless to say if you like his albums you’ll love the live show.
The show was like the albums turned up to eleven. Absolutely amazing and well worth the $8 to get in. Frontalot played many of my favorite songs plus a few cuts off his new album. I actually expected him to play a lot more new stuff of his new album, but I can’t complain. Final Boss is really great and is starting to grow on me in a big way. I also tried to record the show on my iRiver but I really need to find a mic more suited for loud concerts since it was totally blown out. But Diana did grab a little video on her digital camera.
But Frontalot wasn’t the only nerdcore rapper on the bill for the evening. Opening was Dual Core, YTCracker, and MC Lars who was billed as the headliner but later turned out wasn’t. I wasn’t too familiar with the openers but they were pretty great as well. I’ve checked out MC Lars and YTCracker before and was a little familiar with their music. Lars played a pretty good size set made up of his own songs, along with tracks from his and YTCracker’s new album The Digital Gangster LP. MC Lars also had videos that accompanied the songs which was a nice touch since most of them were quite hillarious. As a added bonus Front’s band played with him as well during his set. YTCracker also did a short solo set along with backing up Frontalot during his set.
Dual Core kicked the evening off, and was really great dispite the fact I’d never heard any of their music before. Actually it was only the rapper half of Dual Core int80, with the music being played by an iPod. Int80 had the biggest smile on his face during the evening and just seemed to be having the time of his life. HIs music was really great as well and he involved the audience quite a bit. I didn’t have enough cash to buy any of his CDs at the show, but I’ll have to order one soon.
So check out the tour itinerary and see if MC Frontalot’s tour is coming to your neck of the woods. They had a pretty bad accident on tour this week and could use your support. It’s also great to go to a show where all the artists are easily accessible. When is the last time you bought a t-shirt from the band? I’m looking forward to rocking my MC Frontalot and MC Lars shirts once it gets warmer. I’d highly recommend seeing MC Frontalot and can’t wait for the next time he comes through.
